Happy 18 Years Together

On September 14th of 2020, our anniversary landed on a Monday. My husband and I requested that day off and made certain that we were kids-free for a couple of hours, thanks to Lola and Lolo. Since we both were on a dairy-free diet and my husband also on a gluten-free diet, our choice on restaurants were quite limited. So we dined at an outdoor setting and went home to shower before we met with our little ones. It ended rather short due to unexpected plans, but it was well worth it given that our last date together was more than 6 months ago.

The night before, we got our toddlers’ belongings together for one day’s worth of clothes, diapers, health products, activities, meals, and snacks. This is something I usually do every time we have them over their grandparents’ home. In the morning, we all got ready, had breakfast, dropped off the little ones at Lola and Lolo’s place, and finally went out on our anniversary lunch date. I was so glad I wore thermals underneath and a thick duster sweater because it was chilly out.

We ate at Green Street Smoked Meats in Fulton Market that served house-made smoked Texas barbecue and other sides in both indoor and outdoor dining. And since we got there 30 minutes after opening, there were just a few diners. When we arrived at the podium, the hostess explained to us of their policy in terms of social-distancing, when to have our masks on, and our choice of seating. As soon as we chose our table outside (which were generously spaced apart from other tables), the server immediately brought our water, gave us a few minutes to look at the menu on our mobile devices, ordered with a breeze, and received our food within 5 minutes.

I honestly wanted to try everything, but we didn’t want to stay for too long. So we ordered sliced briskets, smoked chicken legs, pulled pork, elote style corn, and jalapeno corn bread with honey butter. Let me tell you, everything was amazing and tender! There wasn’t a need for dipping sauces, even though they gave us several kinds, because the flavors were just perfection. I kind of regretted not ordering more for takeout, but we had just a little bit left to let my sister and her fiancé have a taste.

Check out those fork lifts above lol.

After our short but sweet and tangy lunch, we walked over to the other side of the building and grabbed some drinks at Sawada Coffee. The interior had an industrial feel and it was pretty cool how the space is shared with Green Street Smoked Meats. I ordered the matcha latte while my husband got the matcha americano. I forgot that the latte contained 2% milk which can be substituted with non-dairy milk (macadamia, almond, or oat milk). So just that day I allowed myself to enjoy my dairy drink guilt-free. Yes they were both amazing, but I do want to try the military latte, hot and iced!

Afterwards, we wanted to do a last-minute walk in Montrose Beach but it was closed off, which I totally forgot. And then I also wanted to check out the new Joong Boo Market in the North Park neighborhood to buy some random snacks and treats that I’ve never had before. But we ran out of time. Soo… rain check! Until next time, or I may just go by myself during the weekend as soon as the market opens.
