Product Review: TWSBI Mini FP White RoseGold V2

I’m very particular when it comes to fountain pens (FP) and the very first attribute I search for is the overall weight. In the past, I purchased a Lamy Studio FP. As charmingly smooth with minimalistic qualities as it is, it was quite heavy and the grip diameter felt slightly intimidating for my fingers. I really wanted to adapt to the pen, but writing with a heavy instrument is not ideal for lengthy sessions. So I needed something lightweight and generally petite enough to get through a couple of pages.

I wasn’t actively searching for a fountain pen; I just happen to come across a photo from an Instagram account and it definitely caught my gaze. I’ve researched the technical specifications as well as customer reviews from various sources and it appeared like an instrument that I can harmonize to rather than my Lamy Studio.

The fountain pen was the TWSBI Mini White RoseGold V2 with a rose gold-plated fine-point nib and trim. This pen is the second iteration of the first, hence V2, but with minor changes such as improvements to the plating and the addition of more rose-gold plating to other parts of the pen. It is packaged with a wrench and silicone grease that may be used for maintenance purposes but is not needed to be applied immediately.

I was slightly hesitant to purchase the TWSBI Mini initially because it didn’t have a triangular grip, which helps release my quadrupod grasp in order to write properly, although it may be something that I can work with. This fountain pen features a built-in piston-filling system by submerging the nib in bottled ink and twisting the end knob until it stops. The acrylic barrel is transparent so the writer can view the ink color and level in the reservoir, which has a maximum ink capacity of 1.17-ml. The body and grip material is made of resin, and the non-retractable nib is composed of stainless steel for anti-corrosion and anti-rusting properties.

Capping and uncapping the TWSBI Mini Fountain Pen requires one full rotation and can be postable as it fits to the back of the barrel. When the clipped cap is posted, the overall length of the pen is 5.51 inches, and 4.64 inches when the pen is closed. The weight of the pen is 19-g making it an ideal fountain pen for users with smaller hands and fingers like myself. However when the cap is removed, the rest of the pen is 10-g. It’s interesting to note the similar weight of the cap compared to the body, but the cap does create balance and it feels similar to a standard fountain pen during a writing session.

This beauty arrived just on time for the weekend. Everything about this fountain pen is so delicately gorgeous and is actually my first TWSBI! I received it a couple nights ago followed by a one-day quarantine period, and then patiently waited for the next morning to take it on a well-deserved photoshoot under the natural winter sunlight. I think I'm going to watch a few YouTube videos on how to use it before I break it in.

What was your first TWSBI or any other fountain pen?
